“The Heart Of Our Community”
Keene Central School is a small single building school district located in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains. Easy access to the outdoors and all it holds along with the beautiful scenery make our district and community a wonderful place to learn and grow. Like all small schools everyone wears many hats and we have a true appreciation for how all of these roles interconnect and embracing the importance of these connections makes us all better people. Coming out of a pandemic has increased awareness of the importance of a strong school on the development of the youth in our community.
We continuously strive to address the wide variety of academic, athletic, social-emotional and mental health needs of our students in ways that best match their needs. Educating the whole child and addressing their individual needs is critical to supporting their growth and development to adulthood. Our smaller class settings help build a better understanding and awareness of all our students and their paths to success and allows us to meet our vision of “Let each become all that they are capable of becoming”.
We want to thank our community for their continued support of our vision along with their continuous support of our students. Their support along with that of our other partners provides a diverse and enriched learning experience for our students. Without this support, none of what makes us KCS would be possible.

Keene Central School is a vital and cherished part of the community life and cultural tradition of Keene Valley, NY. Located on the Au Sable River in the heart of the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks, this rural K-12 public school serves the children of Keene and Keene Valley in one building, under one roof.
Keene Central School District is locally run, benefits from a close relationship among teachers, staff, students and families, and is strengthened by unparalleled community involvement.
Student achievement consistently ranks above average. Small class sizes allow for individualized learning and flexibility within a traditional educational model and experienced faculty members work closely together with parents to ensure that each child is successful.
Keene Central School is one of the most vibrant and highly regarded school districts in the region.
I am excited to welcome all students, staff and families back in-person for the 2021-2022 school year. The capital project is well underway and almost all areas of campus will be affected. The momentary inconvenience will be well worth it when our new spaces are online and available to students, staff and community members.
While COVID remains a facet in our daily lives, KCS has worked to implement protocols to reduce risk and ensure the safety of all. Continued vigilance, patience and cooperation are much appreciated as we navigate this “new normal.” We ask that members of the Keene community continue to wear masks, wash their hands, maintain respiratory etiquette and stay home when they are not feeling well. If all do their part, we can ensure that we remain open for in-person learning and that our students can enjoy amazing place-based learning opportunities that are a hallmark of a Keene education.
Our little school nestled deep in the high peaks is one of a kind, and a most special place. I cannot thank students, staff, parents and community members for their ongoing support of Keene Central School.
Looking forward to another great year!
