ACT & SAT Testing

ACT/SAT Testing

This page is dedicated to an explanation required college entrance exams as well as career assessments used during Grades 8-12.

ACT

The ACT is the most widely accepted college entrance exam in the USA. It assesses the high school student’s general educational development and ability to complete college-level work.

The ACT is composed of four multiple-choice tests in English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science as well as an optional writing test requiring students to compose an essay. The tests allow students to show what they’ve learned and give them an idea of what will be expected later in their educational careers.

There are multiple test dates for the ACT throughout the school year with October and June being the most popular. More information is available from the Counseling office.

SAT

The SAT reasoning test, published by the College Board, consists of three sections: Critical Reading, Mathematics, and Writing. A student must take all three components at a test administration.

The critical reading has sentence completion and passage-based questions. The mathematics section is based on the math that college-bound students typically learn during their first three years of high school. The writing section has multiple choice questions and a written essay. The SAT assesses how well you analyze and solve problems.

PSAT

The PSAT/NMSQT measures critical thinking skills that are important for success in college. This includes critical reading, math problem-solving, and writing skills.

Taking the PSAT/NMSQT enables students to get feedback about critical academic skills, seek information from colleges, enter scholarship competitions, prepare for the SAT and initiate the college-planning process.

The PSAT/NMSQT is the qualifying test each year for the national Merit Scholarship programs. The test is usually given on the 3rd Wednesday of October at KCS.
