Art Program

The visual art program at Keene Central School has many strengths. We work to help students develop confidence in self-expression through skills acquisition, theory and art history. Our program is designed to be activity-oriented and provides a wide variety of hands-on experiences. Additionally, the visual art curriculum is strongly coordinated with core courses, creating an integrated program that reinforces learning in the academic areas.

Art is part of the curriculum from Kindergarten through the 8 th grade. In order to satisfy New York State’s requirements for graduation, each student must take at least one full unit in the Arts during his or her high school career. At Keene Central School, this may be fulfilled with one full unit in music or art, or with two, half units. Students with interest may take art all four years of high school.

Over the years, the Art and Spanish departments have developed a strong working relationship. Annual projects that emphasize the Spanish curriculum are incorporated into the visual arts program. Together the departments provide an opportunity for high school students to participate in a field trip to New York City to experience art and culture with a Hispanic influence.

There is a great deal of community support for the Arts in the Keene Valley area. Historically a destination for artists, the legacy lives on and several district residents are avid collectors or working actively as artists. This rich culture provides many opportunities for students to experience visiting artists and studio tours.

In addition, student work is shown in many art shows that take place locally and regionally. Some of these opportunities include events at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts, the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts in Plattsburgh, the Keene Valley Library, and the High Peaks Artists Show. Students are encouraged to participate in visual arts contests and activities sponsored by local businesses as well.
