Q: Does Keene Central School accept students who are not residents of the school district (Keene, Keene Valley)?

A: Yes. Keene Central School District believes that accepting non-resident students benefits the school community by creating a slightly larger more diverse student population. There is an application process. Applications are due before May 1 st for admission in September and before November 1 st for admission in January. If a student is accepted, tuition is charged annually and re-application is required every year.

Tuition for the 2007-2008 school year is $1500. per student. Family rates differ slightly. For more information about Keene Central School, to schedule a tour or to request a non-resident application, please call the District Office at 518.576.4555.

Q: Are there opportunities for adults to get involved at Keene Central School?

A: Of course! A variety of opportunities exist for you to jump in and roll up your sleeves at Keene Central School. From assisting with school plays and musicals, to visiting classrooms and accompanying field trips or joining an active PTA, parent and community involvement is most welcome by faculty and staff. Contact the individual teacher directly to share your time and expertise in or out of the classroom, or to simply arrange to come and spend some time at the school.

Q: What is Distance Learning?

A: The Distance Learning classroom at Keene Central School creates “virtual classrooms” by linking students in schools throughout New York State. Using two-way television cameras and monitors through real time video, students are able to see and interact with teachers and classmates from other schools. This facility allows students access to courses we do not currently offer at KCS. The courses offered through distance learning vary from year to year.

Q: Do opportunities exist for Keene Central School students to earn college credits?

A: Yes. There are several ways to earn college credit while attending KCS. High School students may earn college credits by successfully taking Advanced Placement (AP) exams and/or by taking College Advancement Program (CAP) courses offered at KCS through North Country Community College.

Q: Who sets school policy and makes decisions?

A: The Keene Central School District Board of Education is comprised of five elected town residents who each serve a three year term. Meetings are held each month on the third Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the library at Keene Central School. The public is welcome to attend. Among its duties, the Board is responsible for creating the annual budget, complying with state regulations and setting policies for the District. Our Superintendent, Cynthia Ford-Johnston, is responsible for the daily operation of the school. She has been the Superintendent of Schools at Keene Central School District since 1996.

Q: How do I reach the tax collector?

A: Every year, the tax collector is appointed by the Keene Central School District Board of Education. The tax collector has school office hours only during tax season. For contact information please call the District Office at 518.576.4555.
